If you put the wrong passcode into your phone, you will find yourself locked out for a short while. If you continue to enter the wrong passcode, you may end up locked out permanently. If this happens, unfortunately the only way forward is to completely reset your disabled iPhone back to factory settings (and hopefully restore a backup).

How to unlock a disabled iPhone using iTunes

The first step to try is to connect your disabled iPhone to iTunes on a computer to reset and then restore a backup. It’s important to note that if you don’t have a backup to restore, then resetting your iPhone will delete everything off your iPhone.

  1. Connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer by ensuring iTunes is open and connecting the phone with a USB cable.
  2. On the top left of the screen, select the icon for your iPhone. Select Summary.
  3. Click the restore option.
  4. This will reset your iPhone to its factory settings. After this you can follow the instructions on your computer to restore your iPhone with a backup.

Unlock disabled iPhone using recovery mode

If your iPhone won’t connect to iTunes, you will need to put it into recovery mode first. Do this after connecting your iPhone to iTunes with a USB cable.

  • iPhone 8 or later, click volume up button, then volume down, then hold the power button until you see connect to iTunes on the screen.
  • iPhone 7, hold power button for three seconds, then slide power off to the right. Press and hold volume down until you see connect to iTunes.
  • iPhone 6s or older, hold power button for 3 seconds, then slide power off to the right. Next, hold home button until you see connect to iTunes.

You will then be able to select the restore option. This will reset your iPhone to its factory settings. After this you can follow the instructions on your computer to restore your iPhone with a backup.

How to unlock a disabled iPhone using iCloud and Find My iPhone

Find my iPhone is a feature from Apple that lets you track your iPhone or you can even use it to resent and restore your disabled iPhone.

  1. Open icloud.com/find
  2. Login with your Apple ID and password.
  3. Select all devices at the top of the screen and from the drop-down menu, click on the iPhone you want to restore.
  4. Select erase iPhone and then confirm erase. You will need to re-enter your Apple ID password.
  5. Once your device has been wiped, it will power up as a new iPhone. After this you can follow the instructions on your computer to restore your iPhone with a backup.

Fix Disabled iPad or iPhone Using a Mac computer and Finder

You can use Finder on your Mac to unlock a disabled iPhone if you have one that has been updated to Catalina or later.

  1. With a USB cable, connect your device to your computer. Your computer may bring up an option to select Trust This Computer or you may need to put in a passcode.
  2. In the finder menu, select your iPhone, then select restore backup.
  3. Select the backup you wish to restore — the most recent will be best. You may need to enter a password.
  4. Keep your iPhone connected to your computer until the process is complete.
